Moving west, Howard became Senator from Michigan and wrote the resolutions adopted by the convention at Jackson on July 6, 1854, on which the Republican Party was founded. He was also the sole author of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. His birthplace stands about 2 miles to the east.
