Redwood Mountain Grove
Nature
1
Redwood Mountain Grove, on the western slope of California’s Sierra Nevada in Kings Canyon National Park and Giant Sequoia National Monument, is the largest grove of giant sequoias on earth. This old-growth forest is renowned for its dense concentration of giant sequoias, including the tallest known specimen and other exceptionally massive trees such as the Hart Tree; the Roosevelt Tree, once the grove’s largest, was later killed by fire. Fire has long shaped both the grove and scientific understanding of these forests, from deliberate burns in 1969 to the severe 2021 KNP Complex Fire, which burned much of the grove and caused especially heavy loss in some areas.
