Caudy's Castle is a sandstone rock pinnacle above the Cacapon River in Hampshire County, West Virginia, near Bloomery Pike south of Forks of Cacapon. At 1,070 feet above sea level, it is formed of Ridgeley, or Oriskany, sandstone and marks the southern end of Castle Mountain. The formation is named for James Caudy, an early Hampshire County pioneer and settler. According to local tradition, during the French and Indian War he defended himself there against an attack by fifteen Native Americans. Also called Castle Rock, it is remembered both as a prominent geologic landmark and for the frontier legend tied to its name.
