In July 1863, Confederate Gen. John H. Morgan raided through Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio seeking to bring the war to the North. Defeated at Buffington Island, he fled up the Ohio River and tried to cross into West Virginia. Members of the state legislature armed themselves in anticipation of invasion. The war's longest raid ended on July 26, 1863, with Morgan's capture.
