Treasure Mountain, a 13,535-foot peak in Colorado’s Elk Mountains near Marble, stands above the headwaters of Yule Creek and the Crystal River basin and is closely linked to the famous Colorado Yule Marble quarried on its western side. That stone, formed when Mississippian Leadville Limestone was altered by heat during Tertiary intrusion and uplift nearby, became renowned for use in the Lincoln Memorial despite early doubts about its suitability. The mountain’s later name also reflects enduring folklore: a legend of a lost French gold expedition, buried treasure, a survivor named Le Blanc, and William Yule’s later searches helped attach treasure lore to this rugged alpine landscape.
