Facing laws and social customs that treated them as second-tier citizens, the Little Rock Nine, inspired by the expanding civil rights struggle, chose to define themselves differently. With the help of steadfast parents, other family members, and members of the community who shared their vision, these young people understood the reality of their time but believed in a different reality yet to come. That focus helped them endure the indignities imposed on them by those committed to inequality. Supported by countless people around the world and guided especially by L.C. and Daisy Bates, the Little Rock Nine walked through the doors of Central High School, and their courage symbolically opened doors across segregated America.
