Little Paul Mazakutemani was a noted Indian orator born at Lac Qui Parle. After converting to Christianity, he became President of the Hazelwood Republic. In 1857 he participated in the rescue of Abbie Gardner from hostiles on the James River near Redfield. During the War of Outbreak in 1862, he and other friendlies saved the lives of many white people at exposed points on the Minnesota frontier.
