During the Civil War, Sussex County organized and sent out Confederate military units including Company A, 41st Virginia Regiment Infantry, the “Sussex Sharp Shooters”; Company D, 13th Virginia Regiment Cavalry; Company E, 16th Virginia Regiment Infantry; Company F, 41st Virginia Regiment Artillery, Wise’s Legion; and Company H, 13th Virginia Regiment Cavalry, the “Sussex Light Dragoons.” A roll of members was kept in the county clerk’s office.
