Provided for by the Constitution of 1845 with funds from federal land grants, the State Seminary of Learning and Military Academy opened in 1860, closed during the Civil War, and reopened in 1865. It burned in 1869 and moved to the Institute for Deaf, Dumb, and Blind in Baton Rouge. In 1870, it became Louisiana State University.
