Fishing Creek Aquatic Life
Nature
Fishing Creek is home to fish, reptiles, and turtles that can be seen swimming in the creek or sunning themselves on rocks and its banks. Red-eared sliders can live up to 30 years and have poor hearing, but they can sense movement through vibrations. Snapping turtles cannot pull themselves into their shells like other turtles and instead use their long necks and powerful bite when they sense danger. Turtle shells consist of the plastron on the underside and the carapace on the top shell, and most turtles pull their limbs into their shells when they see danger. Looking east from this vantage point, the roof of the Chesapeake Beach Railway Station can be seen. The station, now the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum, served the first trains that brought visitors during the summer of 1900. On June 9, 1900, the town celebrated the grand opening of the Chesapeake Beach Resort, which was envisioned and built by Otto Mears, David Moffat, and business associates from Denver, Colorado.
