Granite Dome
Nature
Granite Dome is a 10,320-foot summit in Tuolumne County, California, within the Emigrant Wilderness of Stanislaus National Forest. Its north face rises about 2,300 feet above Relief Valley over two miles, giving it distinct local relief. Runoff from the mountain flows south through Cherry Creek toward the Tuolumne River and north through Relief and Summit creeks toward the Middle Fork Stanislaus River. The name, a plain description of the landform, was applied by the U.S. Geological Survey and officially adopted by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, appearing in publications by at least 1899. It remains the only officially named Granite Dome in the United States.
