Jayne's Hill, in West Hills County Park north of Melville, is generally regarded as Long Island's highest point, rising roughly 387 to 400.9 feet above sea level on the Harbor Hill moraine. Known over time by several names, it came to be recognized as the island's tallest summit as later surveying lowered the reported heights of competing locations. The hill is closely tied to Walt Whitman, who was born nearby, visited it, and in 1881 praised its broad views. Although development and forest growth have largely closed those vistas, the summit remains a public destination on the Walt Whitman Trail, valued for both its literary associations and its status as Long Island's highest ground.
