From this vicinity Sherman’s forces launched the first attacks on Johnston’s Kennesaw lines after both armies withdrew from Paulding County. On June 6, 1864, the 20th A. C. occupied an east-west line on Stilesboro Road, facing south and extending 1 mile east; Old Mount Olivet Church stood 0.25 mile east and was burned the same day. On June 9, Cox’s Division of the 23d A. C. took position west along Stilesboro Road, connecting with Hascall’s Division astride Burnt Hickory Road. The objective of the Federal forces was Hardee’s A. C. from Gilgal Church to Pine Mountain.
