On Dec. 8, 1863, 200 Confederate forces under Col. John M. Hughs attacked here. Twelve days earlier he had attacked Monticello, Ky., and captured then paroled a garrison of 153 men, but found no supplies. Continuing to harass USA forces and seek stores, he came here, captured and paroled a garrison of 86, and secured a quantity of stores, saddles, bridles, and 500 stand of small arms.
