Claxton First United Methodist Church was the first organized church in Claxton, Georgia. Its first pastor was Rev. C.S.T. Strickland. Its charter members were Joseph M. Bradley, Mrs. Agnes Bradley Rogers, Willis F.M. Edwards, Hattie Edwards, Mrs. Ida Edwards Sconyers, Mrs. Virginia Edwards Hendrix, and Mrs. Sallie Edwards Elmore, who joined on May 10, 1893, and Henry R. Elmore, Mrs Ella Elmore Edwards, Mike T. Edwards, and Pete Hendrix, who joined on August 12, 1894.
