Alcatraz East in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, is a privately owned museum focused on the history of crime and punishment in the United States. Founded by attorney John Morgan and chief operating officer Janine Vaccarello, it opened in 2008 in Washington, D.C., as the National Museum of Crime and Punishment and moved to the Smokies in 2016. Designed to resemble a 19th-century prison, the two-story museum combines historical interpretation, forensic science, and interactive exhibits. Its galleries examine crime, investigation, prosecution, punishment, victims’ experiences, and prevention, while displaying artifacts linked to famous criminal cases, public figures, and law-enforcement history.
