Monon, Indiana, stood at the intersection of the New Albany and Salem railroad, organized in 1847, and the Indianapolis, Delphi and Chicago railroad, established in 1878. These lines later merged to become the Monon Route, Indiana’s beloved Hoosier Line, and provided the state with more than a century of passenger service. The Monon became known nationwide for fine passenger and dining service until 1967. It was one of the first first class railroads to completely dieselize in 1947, and it merged with the Louisville and Nashville on July 30, 1971.
