Difficult Creek Natural Area Preserve is an 819-acre protected public area in Halifax County, Virginia, owned and maintained by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. Its importance lies in efforts to restore part of Virginia’s southern Piedmont to pre-settlement conditions shaped by recurring natural fire, when open, prairie-like savannas with scattered pines and hardwoods covered the region. Management focuses on prescribed burning and removing loblolly pine plantations to recover that earlier landscape. The preserve also protects rare plants that survived from the original prairie vegetation in disturbed corridors and now supports them as part of the broader restoration.
