Virginia Randolph Cottage, now a museum in Glen Allen, preserves the legacy of Virginia E. Randolph, an influential African-American educator in Henrico County. Born in 1874 to former slaves, she was selected in 1908 to develop a model program for training and supervising vocational teachers. Working with the Jeanes Foundation, she created methods in Henrico County that were later adopted widely, including internationally, while teaching in county schools until retiring in 1949. The brick building, completed in 1937 for home economics classes tied to her work, remained in educational use until 1969–70, became a museum, and was named a National Historic Landmark in 1974. Randolph is buried nearby.
