Born in Iredell County, North Carolina, John Houston Bills settled in Bolivar, then called Hatchie Town, in 1821. A successful merchant, planter, real estate operator, and politician, he was also an extensive traveler and a diarist. He purchased The Pillars and lived there until his death. He served as chairman of the county court for forty-eight years and as Bolivar's postmaster.
