The Senate House was built in 1676 by Colonel Wessel Ten Broeck as his home in the tiny village of Esopus (Kingston). It took its name because the first elected Senate of the State of New York met there on the morning of September 9, 1777. In front of the house, on a hill overlooking the lowlands, ran the line of stockades that enclosed the settlement against Indian attack. The State purchased this historic home in 1888, and an adjacent museum houses a notable portrait gallery, rich manuscript collections, and other Hudson Valley memorabilia.
