Ober Gatlinburg is a mountaintop resort above Gatlinburg in the Great Smoky Mountains and Tennessee’s only ski area. Established in 1962 as Gatlinburg Ski Resort, it grew from a small private club with four ski runs into a year-round attraction with expanded trails, indoor recreation, and summer activities. A crucial change came when Claude Anders built the Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway, opened in 1973, linking downtown to the mountain; after later troubles, the Anders family bought and merged the operations in 1975. Renamed Ober Gatlinburg in 1977, it has relied on snowmaking, expanded scenic and recreational features, and remained closely tied to Gatlinburg below.
