Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Milford, Maine, was established in 1988 to protect the ecological integrity of the Sunkhaze Meadows peat bog and the surrounding wetlands, streams, forests, and wildlife resources. Covering 11,435 acres, it contains Maine’s second-largest peatland, with raised bogs divided by broad streamside meadows and a diverse wetland system formed by Sunkhaze Stream and its tributaries. These habitats support a rich variety of wildlife, including numerous state-listed endangered or threatened species. Added divisions in Benton and Unity are managed for grassland-nesting birds, and the refuge also oversees conservation easements and the Johnson Brook Trail.
