Assateague State Park occupies the north end of Assateague Island, a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and Sinepuxent Bay, within a long protected coastal stretch. Proposed in 1940 and 1952, it was established in 1956 after Maryland accepted 540 acres, with later land purchases and visitor development expanding the park. Known for its ocean beach, bay shore, marsh, campground, and wildlife including deer, waterfowl, and the island’s feral horses, it balances recreation with conservation. Its traditions include an annual beach walk begun in 1980 to celebrate the landscape and oppose development, and nearby Rackliffe House adds another historic feature.
