Hubert H. Humphrey graduated from Doland High School in 1929, became mayor of Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1945, served in the United States Senate from 1949 to 1965, was Assistant Senate Majority Leader in 1961, was elected the 38th Vice President of the United States in 1964, was the Democratic nominee for President of the United States in 1968, returned to the United States Senate from 1971 to 1978, and died of cancer on January 13, 1978. Known as “The Happy Warrior,” he said that people live by hope and promise, that achievement is not enough because people do not always get what they want, and that they must believe someday, somehow, it will be better and that they can do it.
