Hattie W. Caraway, born in Tennessee on February 1, 1878, and later known as an Arkansas daughter, was a good southern wife in the traditional sense. She became the first elected woman U.S. Senator, the first woman to preside over the Senate, and the first woman chairman of a Senate committee. A New Dealer and political liberal, she possessed mind, courage, and convictions, and in all things stood for the interest of her people.
