The United States of America purchased the land from the heirs of Nathaniel Merryman on November 22, 1824. Contractors Jeremiah Berry, Robert Foster, and Ballard Green built the light, Winslow Lewis installed the beacon, Isaac Stearns served as the first lightkeeper, the light was first lit on September 10, 1825, and it was dedicated on July 21, 1962.
