The Rockland Harbor Trail runs about 5.5 miles from end to end, linking many of the city's open spaces, parks, downtown, and waterfront historical sites. Its breakwater is a granite barrier stretching 4,346 feet from Jameson's Point toward Owl's Head. Nearly 700,000 tons of stone were laid between April 1881 and November 1899 to form the breakwater's nine sections. The initial section began about 204 feet from shore and extended 657 feet into the harbor. Granite blocks, some weighing several thousand pounds, were dropped into the water to form a trapezoid 175 feet wide at the base and 43 feet wide at the top. As the jetty advanced, beacons were placed at its southern end to warn ships. In 1888 a small portable light station was erected on granite blocks, and between 1886 and 1895 it was moved four times. The lighthouse standing there today was erected and lit in 1902, and Marie H. Reed Breakwater Park was developed by the City of Rockland in October 1990 for the enjoyment of residents and visitors.
