Blue Mesa Observatory was an astronomical observatory operated by New Mexico State University on Magdalena Peak in southern New Mexico, about 43 kilometers northwest of Las Cruces. Also known as Magdalena Peak Station for the International Planetary Patrol Program, it was founded in 1967 under Clyde Tombaugh, discoverer of Pluto. Its principal instrument was a 0.61-meter Cassegrain reflector installed in 1969, supported by several other scientific devices. The observatory closed in 1993, and its telescope and instruments were moved to Pittsburg State University’s PSU-Greenbush Astrophysical Observatory near Girard, Kansas, where they remain in use. The original site was transferred to the Federal Aviation Administration and replaced with a radar installation.
