This former Titan II intercontinental ballistic missile site south of Tucson preserves a largely intact Cold War launch complex built in 1963 and operated until 1984 as part of the United States’ land-based nuclear deterrent. Surviving the demolition that erased most other Titan II silos, it is one of only two remaining Titan II complexes from the late Cold War and the only place in the United States where a fully preserved ICBM can be seen. Its underground control center, silo, and original support equipment reveal the scale and durability of the system, while its later designation as a National Historic Landmark underscores its historical significance.
