Madera Canyon, on the northwestern face of Arizona’s Santa Rita Mountains southeast of Tucson, is a protected part of Coronado National Forest known for hiking, campsites, and exceptional birdwatching. Once called White House Canyon after a prominent adobe landmark, it was renamed in the early 1900s, though the older name persisted locally. As part of a major Madrean Sky Island, its bowl-shaped watershed and riparian corridor span four life zones, supporting notable biodiversity, including black bears, mountain lions, and more than 256 bird species. Its history also includes ranching, mining, the Pennington family, the White House settlement, and later archaeological work at that site.
