Related Middle Woodland mound centers were located in northern Mississippi, eastern Arkansas, western Kentucky, and along the Tennessee River, but none rivaled Pinson Mounds in size, at about 400 acres, or complexity. Sauls Mound, near the center of the Pinson complex, is among the largest earthworks in the United States. Smaller mound groups stood a short distance from Pinson upstream and downstream along the Forked Deer River and were probably associated with the Pinson Complex. Pinson served as a central ceremonial place in a broader settlement landscape. The Savannah Mound site, at the present location of Savannah, Tennessee, near the Tennessee River bridge, no longer exists but may have had some affinities with Pinson Mounds, as it was likely close in date and had a large central mound with smaller mounds arrayed to two sides.
