The John C. Gifford Arboretum is a tropical plant arboretum and botanical garden on the University of Miami campus in Coral Gables, Florida. Founded in 1947 by Frank J. Rimoldi and Roy Woodbury, it was named two years later for professor John C. Gifford, known for his work with tropical woods and tropical forestry. The Gifford Society of Tropical Botany formed in 1950 to encourage study of tropical plants, and the collection expanded to more than 500 plants, including exhibits such as plants domesticated by the Mayans. In later years, supporters and preservation advocates worked to protect the arboretum from development pressures.
