Baptists in White Deer first met in the Presbyterians’ house of worship, gathering twice a month and sharing a union Sunday School. On June 16, 1912, several brothers and sisters organized White Deer Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Bro. J. J. Baird and S. P. Clements, missionaries of the Palo Duro Association, and adopted articles of faith and a church covenant. Seven members came by letters of transfer, four by statement, and seven were received by experience for baptism. Bro. Baird served as part-time pastor for the first year, and H. P. Bobbitt and J. D. Edgar were elected the first deacons. On November 23, 1919, the Baptist Women’s Missionary Society organized, and the church began a building fund for its own sanctuary. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Hughes donated four lots for the site, and Bro. K. F. Keller led the congregation into its new sanctuary in May 1921. The mission revival-style building featured a red brick veneer, concrete detailing, and entry stairs above a raised basement. By 1926, through gifts and sales of wheat and cotton crops, the church paid off its building debt and began work on a parsonage. Around 1930, it became First Baptist Church of White Deer. By 1935, its 377 members included several from surrounding communities. During a tornado on June 6, 1951, many citizens sheltered in the basement as homes and schools were destroyed and the church was narrowly missed. The following year, while students attended classes in city churches, the church basement also served as the school cafeteria. After a new sanctuary was completed in 1959, the historic church became the education building, and it has also hosted many school and community functions while continuing to serve through mission work, charity, and outreach.
