The Church of St. John Baptist is the oldest church continuously in use in the Texas Panhandle’s earliest Episcopal parish. The first services were held in November 1877 by the Rev. Mr. Townsend of the Dallas Diocese in the J. B. McClelland Ranch house. Isaac W. Carhart gave the site in 1891, and the building was erected in 1893. Mrs. Elizabeth Goff of Philadelphia, a donor, chose the name. Bishop A. C. Garrett consecrated the church on April 24, 1893, and its first vicar was the Rev. W. D. Sartwell, who served from 1890 to 1893.
