Poor agricultural practices and sustained drought throughout the Southern Plains during the 1930's left the land barren of growing crops. Strong winds whipped across the empty fields, creating huge black clouds of dust that traveled across Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. The area became known as the "Dust Bowl," triggering the largest human migration in American history. Most of those fleeing traveled Route 66 in their flight to California.
