History
Hopewell Museum in Hopewell, New Jersey, developed from antiques donated by Sarah D. Stout, especially objects tied to the town’s early inhabitants, which gave it a strong local focus within American history. Incorporated in 1922 to support a shared library and museum building, it first occupied an 1877 three-storey brownstone built by Randolph Stout. After the public library moved in 1965, a two-story addition enlarged the museum in 1967 and made room for new exhibits, including Southwestern Native American crafts donated by Dr. David H. Hill. Its collections connect Hopewell’s past with broader American village life from the colonial era to the present.
