Hackberry is a native tree distinguished by its ridged, warty bark. It commonly grows on floodplains and river banks and is also well suited to urban environments because it tolerates both drought and floods. Its hard, round fruits were used by Native Americans as food, and pioneer homes often had flooring cut from its firm, beautifully grained, easily split wood.
