Built in 1854 as the Academy Building, Old Main grew to encompass all areas of campus life, including classrooms, residence halls, and administrative offices. With fountains situated on both sides of the entry sidewalk, it eventually stretched from Frederick Street to just across from Dutcher Hall, and a bell tower was the focal point of the facade. In the 1960s, the building was torn down to make room for the construction of Genser Library. The stained glass windows from Old Main's chapel were salvaged and installed in other buildings across campus.
