Great Shoals Light was a screw-pile lighthouse in Maryland, erected in the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Wicomico River to mark a narrow channel and guide navigation through shallow, complicated waters. The Maryland General Assembly requested it in 1882, but funding did not arrive until the next year, and further delays postponed its commissioning until August 1884. The lighthouse served this important navigational role until 1966, when it was dismantled and replaced by a modern automated light built on the original foundation.
