Deal Island Wildlife Management Area in western Somerset County, Maryland, near Deal Island, protects 13,565 acres of habitat while supporting low-impact public recreation on the lower Eastern Shore. Managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife and Heritage Service, it includes a 2,800-acre man-made impoundment, open water, marsh, and managed land that support fishing, canoeing, kayaking, photography, hunting, crabbing, hiking, and off-road cycling. It is especially important for birdlife: the Maryland Ornithological Society has recorded more than 220 species here, including waterfowl and some uncommon ducks, making it a major destination for birdwatching as well as seasonal geese and duck hunting.
