Frank S. Scott was one of many people who helped transform the fragile flying machine into the United States Air Force. Born in Braddock, Pa. on December 2, 1883, Corporal Scott served as a crew chief mechanic with the U.S. Army Aviation School at College Park, Md. In December 1912, he became the first enlisted man to be killed in a military airplane crash. In 1917, a small army airfield near Belleville, Illinois, was named in his honor, and this installation is the only U. S. Air Force Base to bear the name of an enlisted man.
