Powered by compressed air, this engine began operation in the late 1880s and ceased around 1909. It was used to remove gold ore from the Red Point Mine, located approximately 12 miles northeast of Foresthill. This area was mined heavily from the mid 1800s to the last part of that century and yielded as much gold, for the area of ground being worked, as any other area in California. Nearly five million dollars is believed to have been taken from the mines on the main Foresthill Ridge.
