Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve in Cary, North Carolina, protects about 140 acres through a partnership between the state park system and the Town of Cary. Its greatest significance is an unusual plant community, including Eastern hemlocks and other species more typical of the Appalachian Mountains, preserved by the cool, moist conditions of tall north-facing bluffs along Swift Creek since the last ice age. The preserve includes the state-owned Hemlock Bluffs State Natural Area, with visitor services focused at the Stevens Nature Center. About 3 miles of trails, along with boardwalks, overlooks, and other features, provide access while helping safeguard fragile habitat.
