Near here, emigrants traveled the Bozeman Trail from 1864 to 1868 to reach the gold mines at Virginia City, Montana. Facing hostile Indians unwilling to share their hunting grounds, the trail became known as the "Bloody Bozeman" and was discontinued. Later, from 1879 to 1894, the route crossing Little Goose Creek to the south and Jackson Creek to the west was used by the Patrick Bros. Stage Line from Rock Creek near Laramie, Wyoming, to Fort Custer on the Big Horn River in Montana. This building served as a blacksmith shop in the early 1880's for the stage line and ranchers of the valley.
