The history of the George's Creek community reaches back to an 1841 expedition from the Republic of Texas to Santa Fe, New Mexico, when George Barnard and Thomas Torrey passed through the area and later acquired land nearby. Barnard and his brother established a trading post called Barnardville, later renamed Fort Spunky. By 1885, additional families had settled in the area and established farms, businesses, and churches, including Cumberland Presbyterian, Methodist, and Baptist congregations. Records show two active Baptist churches in the George's Creek community in the 1880s, Good Hope and George's Creek, and a third, Buck Creek, formed near the Nemo community in the early 1890s. George's Creek Baptist Church was established in 1885 and in its early years shared a pastor with the Good Hope congregation. The congregations also shared meeting space with other churches in the Methodist church building, in schoolhouses, and under brush arbors and tents. In 1905 the church reorganized, and members built a tabernacle at the cemetery in 1908, where they held services, revivals, and meetings. They later moved into a sanctuary built by the Holiness Church in 1915, which they continue to use. Although records for some periods are scarce, the known history of George's Creek Baptist Church shows more than a century of dedicated worship, and even when regular pastors were absent, the congregation maintained a strong Sunday school program. As the area's population changed, membership changed as well, but the church has continued to serve as a spiritual and social center for the community.
