Titus County was formed from Red River and Bowie counties, created on May 11, 1846, and organized on July 13, 1846. It was named in honor of Andrew J. Titus, who lived from 1814 to 1855 and was a pioneer of northwest Texas, a soldier in the Mexican War, and a member of the Texas Legislature. The county seat is Mt. Pleasant.
