Angel Arch, in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park in southeastern Utah, is the park’s largest natural arch and one of the region’s most striking landforms. Set in a side canyon of Salt Creek Canyon, it was named for its resemblance to an angel with folded wings; before 1963 it was called Pegasus Arch. The formation is an eroded fin of Cedar Mesa Sandstone created from coastal sand dunes deposited about 245 to 286 million years ago during the early Permian. Rising about 450 feet above the canyon floor, with an opening roughly 135 feet high and 120 feet wide, it lies in a remote cold semi-arid desert reached by a long hike and scramble.
