A magnetic mine of the German Navy from World War I was brought to Cresco through the efforts of George Hamilton, a merchant mariner who served aboard an American minesweeper, and it stood as a memorial dedicated to Cresco's five admirals: Frank Lowry, Arthur Moen, Michael Malanaphy, Wallis Petersen, and George Peckham.
