Mount Hope Estate in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, preserves the mansion and grounds of the Grubb family’s ironmaking center, which in the nineteenth century spread across more than 2,500 acres and operated like a small village. The estate grew from iron interests begun by Peter Grubb, who discovered rich deposits and founded Cornwall Ironworks by 1742; Mount Hope itself was established in 1784, and Henry Bates Grubb built the mansion by 1805. The house combines its original Federal character with an 1895 Victorian remodeling, while the grounds retain a rare pre-1840 formal garden plan. Since 1980, the property has operated as a public venue while preserving this important industrial landscape.
